All the Knowledge in the World -Day 07: Multiple Moving Pieces
A writer’s journal of a story it has taken over 20 years to tell
May brain is my biggest impediment to accomplishing anything. It is fractured and scattered and emotional. I have found I need to view it like a co-worker, or more accurately an employee I am supposed to manage.
I have worked with it long enough I know its tendencies and weaknesses. I know that goal setting and penalties don’t work. To-do lists are useless. But what I have recently found is that having multiple projects I am interested in going at once actually leads to progress.
Not multiple deadlines. But instead multiple ideas I find interesting that I can bounce between. It’s the same way I read. I need to have more than one book going at once, plus something I’m writing, plus something to research. Everything moves forward if I can switch to something else at random and see it progress as well.
This is why I have pulled what I intended to be my next story idea into the mix. In order to maintain momentum with All the Knowledge in the World, American Animal has to join the game as well.
