I am taking today off from writing on my book. But I’m not taking it off from writing.

I have a memoir project I’ve been working on simultaneously with my fiction so today is a day reserved for memory.

Memory can be overwhelming. As time goes on it all piles up and can become oppressive. It becomes a pleasure to focus on just one set of memories, tease out the nuance and consider them in isolation instead of just standing under the constant waterfall of recollections.

What I have written thus far covers from late 1998 through late 2003 (the ages of 16-21 for me) and stretches to nearly 90,000 words. I have not lived an exciting life but I have lived a thoughtful one which I recall with clarity and this exercise keeps my writing muscle strong while giving my mind something else to focus on.
